Foundations
José Epifânio da Franca completed the secondary education with high distinction in both São Tomé and Príncipe, at Liceu Nacional D. João II, and Lisbon, at Liceu de Camões, earning exemption from all university entrance examinations due to his high marks.
He obtained a 5-year Licenciatura in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1978, specialising in Telecommunications and Electronics.
During this foundational period, he developed a strong interest in electronic systems, communications, and signal processing, combining analytical rigor with an early appreciation for system-level engineering challenges. This dual orientation—solid theoretical foundations coupled with practical relevance—would become a defining characteristic of his academic work.
Selected Academic Impact
- Distinguished academic performance throughout foundational education
- Early consolidation of a systems-oriented engineering mindset
Early Industry Experience
Between 1980 and 1982, José Epifânio da Franca worked as an Electrical Engineer at Electricidade de Portugal (EDP), initially at the Central Research Laboratory and later at the Central Technology Directorate. His responsibilities encompassed analog and digital circuit and system design, telecommunications systems planning and design, and large-scale infrastructure modernisation.
He played a leading role in the modernisation of the national radio communication networks for energy distribution, including network architecture definition, frequency allocation and planning, technical specifications for transceivers, and coordination with national industry partners. He also delivered technical training programs and represented EDP in national electrotechnical standardisation committees.
This early immersion in applied engineering and national-scale systems had a lasting influence on his academic approach, reinforcing a pragmatic, system-level perspective that would later permeate his teaching and research.
Selected Academic Impact
- Direct involvement in the national grid-based communications infrastructure modernisation.
- Lasting integration of industrial realism into academic practice.
Doctoral Training and Research Identity
In 1982, in preparation and qualification for accessing higher academic studies, he successfully completed the Scientific and Pedagogical Aptitude Examinations at IST — an early institutional recognition of both scientific maturity and teaching capability.
It was then that José Epifânio da Franca pursued doctoral studies at Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, one of Europe’s leading research-based academic institutions, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1985. Concurrently, he received the Diploma of Imperial College, formally recognising the originality and quality of his research work. The Ph.D. degree at Imperial College, University of London, was subsequently awarded the Doctorate Degree equivalent by Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
This period was decisive in shaping his long-term research identity, grounded in the areas of microelectronics, signal processing, and electronic circuits and system design, and firmly embedded in an international research environment.
Selected Academic Impact
- Establishment of an internationally grounded research profile
- Early recognition of combined scientific and pedagogical excellence
Academic Career at Instituto Superior Técnico
José Epifânio da Franca’s academic career at IST evolved progressively through all academic ranks.
Following initial appointments as Visiting and Guest Assistant, he became a full-time Assistant and later Assistant Professor after obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 1985. In 1989, he was appointed Associate Professor.
In 1992, Dr. Franca obtained the Habilitation degree (Agregação) in Electrical and Computer Engineering, marking a formal recognition of academic autonomy, leadership, and scholarly maturity. Between 1994 and 2000, he has held a tenured position as Associate Professor with Habilitation at IST.
In 2000, he was appointed Full Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IST.
Throughout this period, his academic activity combined undergraduate and graduate teaching, multi-faceted student supervision, and intense, sustained research engagements, contributing to the education and formation of multiple generations of engineers and researchers at Portugal’s leading engineering school.
Selected Academic Impact
- Full academic progression within Portugal’s most demanding academic system
- Long-term contribution to high-level engineering education and training
